Penny Marshall

Record-breaking Film Director

Carole "Penny" Marshall was born on October 15, 1943 in New York City to parents Marjorie and Anthony "Tony" Masciarelli. On December 17, 2018 Penny Marshall died of heart failure caused by atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and diabetes in Los Angeles, California, according to E! and Us Weekly. Penny is predeceased by her brother Garry Marshall. She is survived by daughter Tracy Reiner sister Ronny Marshall.

In 1970, her brother Garry Marshall became the executive producer of the television series The Odd Couple. The following year, Marshall was added to the cast to play the role of Myrna. In 1976 Gary casted Penny in the successful television sitcom Lavern & Shirley. Penny Marshall played the role of Lavern DeFazio on the show which ran for 178 episodes.

In 1985, Marshall's friend Whoopi Goldberg convinced her to make her directorial debut for the movie Jumpin' Jack Flash. Marshall went on directing several successful films including Big (1988) , Awakenings (1990) and A League of Their Own (1992).

Marshall was a three-time Golden Globe Award nominee as an actress
In 1991, she was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award.
