In Loving Memory of Chappelle Smalls II

A much-loved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, Chappelle Morris Smalls, 77 of Charlotte, NC, died on Wednesday, August 8, 2019 with his family present. There will be a memorial service held on Saturday, August 17 at 2:00 pm at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, located at 3434 Miranda Road, Charlotte, NC 28216.

Chappelle was born in Savannah, Georgia to Chappelle Sr. and Inez (Ware) Smalls on February 2, 1942. To those who knew him, he was a smart, fun loving man with a great sense of humor, who touched lives with his infectious laughter, generosity, hospitality and caring spirit. He in lived Charlotte, North Carolina for the past 14 years, having moved from Washington, DC in 2005. He graduated from Susquehanna Township High School and attended Virginia Union University. Chappelle was a veteran and served in the US Army. For over 40 years, he was a General Contractor working on countless residential and commercial building projects.

He had many passions in life including playing chess, fishing, boating, cooking and spending time with his grandsons. He really enjoyed helping others and spent considerable time serving his God, Jehovah. Chappelle was married to Gladyes (Crankfield) Smalls on October 22, 1966 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was blessed three children, Alisa Alexander, Chappelle M. Smalls III and Janise (Smalls) Coleman. He had three grandsons, Alexander Smalls, Michael Smalls and Bryce Coleman.

In addition to his parents, Chappelle was preceded in death by his sister, Paulette Smalls and his brother, Gary Smalls and leaves to cherish his life and memory, his devoted wife of 52 years, Gladyes Smalls of Charlotte, NC, his daughters, Alisa Alexander and Janise Coleman, and one son, Chappelle M. Smalls III and his wife, Jamillah Smalls, grandsons Alexander and Michael Smalls and Bryce Coleman; his sisters, Annette Branche, Cathy Wright (Walter), Angie Strain (Willie) , Charlene Cooper (Geoff) and his brother, Robert Strain IV (Doris) all of Harrisburg, PA and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and spiritual brothers and sisters.
