Whitney Houston was born August 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey to parents John and Cissy Houston. She had two siblings, brother Michael and half-brother Gary. On February 11, 2012 Whitney Houston’s personal assistant entered Houston's Beverly Hill California hotel room a found Houston unresponsive, face-down in the bathtub. The Los Angeles County Coroner ascribed Houston’s death to Drowning due to the effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use. Whitney is survived by her mother Cissy Houston Brothers, Michael and Gary Daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. She was interred at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey.
Whitney Houston was immersed in singing and performing from birth. Whitney's mother Cissy was a successful professional singer who won two Grammy Awards. One of Houston's first cousins was five-time Grammy winning singer Dionne Warwick. By age 15 the younger Houston was backup singing professionally. Houston then step into the spotlight, signing her first recording contract with Clive Davis and Arista Records when she was 19.
Houston went onto win six Grammys Awards, two Emmy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards. According to the website whitneyhouston.com Houston founded the Whitney Houston Foundation for Children in 1989. In 1991 was elected to the American Red Cross Board of Directors.
After Houston's death, music executive Clive Davis has been quoted saying - "Whitney was a beautiful person and a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage with her regal presence and gave so many memorable performances here over the years. Simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on and her family asked that we carry on."
Fellow singing superstar Mariah Carey was also quoted - "Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms Whitney Houston. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth."
Dolly Parton- "I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song... Whitney, I will always love you."
